Do you also feel the need to read all the recommended books at the same time? I know that feeling, it can get to your head when you are an avid reader and you want to devour all the beauties out there — it happens to me quite a lot.

I’m reading all sorts and genres of books these days; I feel so good that I’m finally on a reading spree after a long dry spell, to tell you the truth.

Moreover, what makes me happier is that the books I have been reading talk about real issues, and oh, how brilliantly and honestly.

The book I am talking about today is It Ends With Us. I had it on my to-be-read (TBR) pile for a long time, but when something has to inspire you, it only takes a moment, and that was when I finally began reading it.

Here is what I thought about the book and how impactful it was —

About the Book

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover was published on August 2, 2016. It is a contemporary romance novel. The author has set the story in Boston, where Lily Bloom moves from her hometown, Maine, to start her business.

Lily’s life in Maine has not been easy, but she worked her way out of all the negativity — that is father’s domestic violence against her mother.

And so, when she met Ryle Kincaid, she felt something ignite inside her and found him too good to be true. He is a handsome Neurosurgeon; who likes Lily just as much as she does. But his reluctance to be in a relationship confuses her.

At last, after trying to stay away from each other, they get into a relationship. However, Lily being in love, realizes she is in for a surprise soon after Atlas Corrigan reappears in her life — as it brings out the other side of Ryle, which is no less than her worst nightmare. And now, it feels as if she had run into what she ran from.

Seeing Atlas brings Lily so many buried memories and feelings. She knew him from high school. He was homeless, and she gave him a place to live. In return, he made her life in Maine a lot less miserable.

As expected, after the abuse, Ryle apologises for his behavior and promises it won’t happen again. He also confesses having anger issues because of something that happened in his childhood. Lily accepts his plea and gives him another chance.

But that changes nothing; he would get angry, hit her again and then apologize. For Lily, the final blow was when he found Atlas’s phone number in her phone, which he had given her in case of emergency. Ryle breaks all his promises and lands her in the hospital — where she finds out about her pregnancy.

Now, she has to decide between living like this or leaving Ryle. Now, she has to decide if and how she wants to break the cycle of abuse. But all the struggle ends when her daughter is born.

Why You Should Read It

When I finished reading the book, I did not know it could have such an impact on my heart. The book is heartbreaking, carrying a huge responsibility to convey the message that it intends to and carefully.

The novel got hold of my attention from the very beginning of it, which is unusual for me as I get distracted easily. And so, the book earned my respect in that regard.

Moreover, I liked how Lily took it upon herself to leave Maine and start a new life away from all the agony. I was rooting for her for being so responsible and strong — how she learned from her mother’s mistakes.

All humans make mistakes. What determines a person’s character aren’t the mistakes we make. It’s how we take those mistakes and turn them into lessons rather than excuses.

Colleen Hoover, It Ends with Us

The author has brilliantly discussed the consequences of domestic violence — how the silence of one victim can create a cycle of abuse that needs to be broken for the coming generations.

It Ends With Us is an incredible, inspiring, and honest novel discussing real issues that can leave a mark on your heart and mind.

The book has changed my perspective on how hard it can get to leave a relationship. You think it was you, who may have triggered such a reaction from your partner, and then you justify their actions and consequently give them another chance and hope for a change. But deep down you know it’s not worth it.

Fifteen seconds. That’s all it takes to completely change everything about a person. Fifteen.
